ASTM A53B Data

Scope

Covers black electric-resistance welded Grade B pipe. Pipe is intended for mechanical and pressure applications and is acceptable for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas and air lines. Pipe is suitable for welding, threading and grooving. Pipe is produced to the latest revision of ASTM A53/A53M.

MANUFACTURE

The weld seam shall be heat treated after welding to a minimum of 1600 °F so that no untempered martensite remains, or otherwise processed in such a manner that no untempered martensite remains.

Hydrostatic and Ultra Sonic Testing

Hydrostatic inspection test pressures for plain-end pipe are listed in Table X 22 of the latest revision of ASTM A53/A53M specification. Test pressures shall be maintained for a minimum of seven seconds.

UltraSonic testing of the weld seam as required by the latest revision of AST A53/A53M is done immediately following the welding process and ahead of the annealing process.

Chemical Requirements

*The combination for these five elements shall not exceed 1.00%

Tensile Requirements

Elongation in 2'Refer to latest revision of ASTM A53/A53M Table A 4.1

Flattening Test

A three step process as defined by the latest revision of ASTM A53/A53M 7.3.3.1

Frequency of Tests

Tensile tests are required on one length of pipe from each heat. Refer to the latest revision of ASTM A5A53M specification for frequency of flattening tests.

End Finish

Plain-end beveled with ends beveled to an angle of 30°, +5°, -0° measured from a line drawn perpendicular to the axis of the pipe, and with a root face of 1/16in ± 1/32 in.

Dimensions and Weights

PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS IN WALL THICKNESS: The minimum wall thickness at any point shall be not more than 12.5% under the specified wall thickness. The minimum wall thickness on inspection shall conform to the requirements given in the latest revision of ASTM A53/A53M Table X2.4

PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS IN OUTSIDE DIAMETER: Pipe shall not vary more than ± 1% from the specified outside diameter.

PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS IN WEIGHT PER FOOT: Refer to Permissible Variations in Weight (Mass) and Dimensions in the latest revision of ASTM A53/A53M.

Product Marking

Refer to Product Marking in the latest revision of ASTM A53/A53M.
